A First Knives Out Mystery Photo Has Been Released – Here’s What We Know About the Plot and Cast

The buzz surrounding the next episode of Knives Out is seriously heating up, as Netflix has released two first-look images.

The first photo shows a star-studded cast seated around a long table – at first glance you can spot Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista. Daniel Craig, who is reprising his role as detective Benoit Blanc, is leaning on the table, commanding the room.

Then there’s a second image, which is more like a behind-the-scenes look. Monáe stands next to a giant camera under the direction of writer and director Rian Johnson.

It was announced in March that deals had been signed for a second and third installment of the murder mystery film, and filming began in June in Greece at the luxurious Villa 20 at the Amanzoe in Porto Heli (watch, it is a feast for the eyes).

Teasing Netflix’s upcoming Tudum movie, where the streamer shares news and additional details about its shows and movies, Netflix said, “Who hasn’t spent the last few years dreaming of a glorious beach ?

“If Knives Out was about deadly flesh-and-blood bonds, Glass Onion pleads to be equally wary of his closest friends.”

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming movie.

Do we still know the plot?

Yes. On Tudum, Netflix exposed the plot. He said: “When tech billionaire Miles Bron invites some of his loved ones for a getaway to his private Greek island, it quickly becomes clear that all is not perfect in paradise. And when someone winds up dead, well, who better than Blanc to peel back the layers of intrigue?

Johnson had also previously said, “That’s the fun thing about it. This movie has a very different vibe to Knives Out, it takes the audience to a very different place both in terms of contrast to a cozy New England town in the fall, this time we’re on a Greek island but also in terms of story it’s not just a repeat of the first movie.

Who is in the cast?

Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson and WWE fighter-turned-actor Dave Bautista join Craig on the Greek island. Then there’s Edward Norton (The French Dispatch), Kathryn Hahn (Bad Moms), Leslie Odom Jr. (Love in the Time of Corona), Jessica Henwick (The Gray Man), and Madelyn Cline (Boy Erased). Yes, everything is set up to be an absolute riot.

There is a trailer

Ok, that’s not much, but fans can still enjoy this trailer that was shared back in June.

There is also a release date

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will debut on Netflix on December 23. There will also be a UK cinema release ahead of the Netflix release, although that date has yet to be announced. The film will also wrap up this year’s BFI London Film Festival, which takes place in October.

Who wrote this ?

Oscar-nominated Johnson, who wrote and directed the first installment, is back for part two. A Hollywood stalwart, Johnson previously wrote and directed 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi as well as the 2012 sci-fi thriller Looper.

In June, Johnson shared a text-only teaser that detailed the cast members. He also shared some ideas

On her social media, Johnson spoke of Agatha Christie, a big influence on the show: “What I love about Agatha Christie is that she never walked on water creatively. I thinks there’s a misperception that his books use the same formula over and over again, but fans know the opposite is true.

“It wasn’t just set pieces or methods of murder, she was constantly expanding the genre conceptually. Under the thriller umbrella, she’s written spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues.

What were his other inspirations?

In addition to Christie’s novels, Johnson said he was inspired by films like 1982’s Evil Under the Sun and the 1973 film The Last of Sheila, which tells the story of a group of socialites who are invited on a yacht to play a treasure hunt mystery. Game.

“There are absolutely some very clear inspirations that I took from it,” Johnson said. “First of all, it’s structured around a group of friends, or frenemies, who all have a power dynamic with one of their successful friends.

“It starts with sending her an invitation to come and play this murder mystery game in this exotic location. In The Last of Sheila, it’s on her yacht, and it all ends up going awry. It’s basically as well as Glass Onion begins.

How was the first movie?

The first installment was a huge success. It cost $40 million to make but grossed over $300 million at the box office. This meant the rights to Part 2 were highly coveted, and there was a “low-key” auction that took place between Netflix, Apple and Amazon earlier this year.

In the end, Netflix won by paying over $400 million for Part 2 and Part 3. According to Deadline, it was “one of the biggest streaming movie deals in history.”

Why is it called Glass Onion?

Glass’s idea came to Johnson as something that is “quite visible from the start” and “something that is clear”. He wanted a metaphor that Detective White could “own as an overworked metaphor he can beat to death”.

So he went through his music library and came across the 1968 Beatles song of the same name, then once Johnson settled on it as an idea, he weaved hidden Beatles references throughout the film.

Johnson said: “If you look at the lyrics of Glass Onion and why John wrote it, it definitely has a thematic connection to our movie and it’s very explicit in the movie and it’s also just a banger of a song.”

The cast members are also thrilled

It will be Craig’s first film since leaving Bond in September. Speaking to Empire magazine in October, Craig said: I’m so lucky to have Rian [Johnson] in my life. He’s such a great writer. This script came along and I was literally like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I couldn’t believe he wanted me to play it. I was going, ‘It says Southern accent, you went here. Really?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah?’

We just finished the second, literally weeks ago. They have just finished in Serbia. Dare I say it’s better? We will see. I don’t want to tempt fate. It’s different, and that’s what’s amazing. It’s still a Benoit Blanc mystery, but it’s very different. I’m very excited about this.

Then, speaking to People Magazine, Bautista said, “I really think it will be as good, if not better, than the first one. I’m still afraid to say that because I don’t want anyone to be offended saying we’re going to be better, but I really mean it.

“I think the characters are so much more colorful. I think people will really dig into this.
