Critical Role has once again teamed up with Penguin Random House to further develop their story, but this time fans will get a deeper look into the mind of one of Campaign 2’s most infamous characters, Lucien. . Critical Role has fleshed out its characters and stories throughout the The origins of Vox Machina, Powerful Nein Originsand Tales of Exandria comics as well as the original novel Friends and relatives who explores the origins of Vex & Vax before joining Vox Machina. Lucien is a perfect addition to the growing roster of characters outside of the mainline PCs who have a whole story centered around them.
Created by Taliesin Jaffe and Matt Mercer, the character was first introduced as Tiefling Bloodhunter Mollymauk Tealeaf, a member of the adventurer party The Mighty Nein. After tragedy struck Mollymauk in battle, her story seems to have come to an end at the start of the campaign. However, many episodes later this turned out not to be the case. Mollymauk had a very mysterious origin after waking up in a tomb with no memory before joining the Traveling Carnival and later the Mighty Nein.
After Mollymauk’s death, her old self had taken over as the menacing Lucien. The Mighty Nein were forced to face their former friend who, in the final battle, took on a monstrous form. Once defeated, the body that was once Lucien and Mollymauk once again awoke with no memory and decided on Kingsley’s new name.

Much of Lucien’s past still remains a mystery, particularly what set him on his dangerous path, but that may not be the case for much longer. Creatures will have the chance to learn more about this mysterious character in the new original novel Critical Role, Lucien’s nine eyes. Taliesin Jaffe shared her excitement for the upcoming novel.
“If there was one story I was looking forward to from the Mighty Nein, it would be this one. The forces that shaped Lucien Nonagon deserve the kind of time and nuance that only a novel can provide. Now I can join the audience as we uncover her story and learn what could possibly drive someone so completely out of themselves.
CRITICAL ROLE: THE MIGHTY NEIN – THE NINE EYES OF LUCIEN COVER AND OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS
Written by New York Times bestselling author Madeleine Roux, Critical Role: The Mighty Nein – Lucien’s Nine Eyes explores the meteoric rise and fall of one of Critical Role’s most notorious and tragic figures. Lucien has always known how to turn a bad situation to his advantage. From growing up on the dangerous streets of Shadycreek Run to years living off the grid and learning blood magic from the Orders of Claret, the charismatic bloodhunter will find a way to gain the upper hand.
During the second campaign, Taliesin teased the rest of the cast when Lucien was revealed telling them he knew nothing about this character, including his past, leaving it to Dungeon Master Matt Mercer. Of the many characters introduced in the second season of Critical Role, Lucien was one of the most complicated, enigmatic, and terrifying. The Nine Eyes Of Lucien is the perfect way to not only explore Lucien’s backstory, but also delve into the mind of this villain. The novel will not only explore Lucien’s early life but also his encounter with The Mighty Nein which could bring a new and intriguing perspective to in-game interactions.
