Netflix has had quite a few blockbuster movies over the past few years, but none of them have taken off like red notice. With a trio of stars like Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, hug the crime red notice was always going to be a big hit for the streaming service. What people might not have expected, however, is the longevity of red noticeis success. Although the film has slowed since its peak debut month, it has always been a quiet dominant force for Netflix, remaining steady as one of the streamer’s most-watched films for three straight months.
Beginning of November, red notice has held a spot on Netflix’s worldwide list of English-language movies ever since. The updated version of the list this week notes that it is red notice12th week in the top 10 movies on the entire service. The next longest sequence in the current list is Don’t look up with six weeks.
Between January 24 and 30, Netflix subscribers around the world watched more than 6.5 million hours of red notice, good enough for sixth place on the Top 10 Movies of the Week list. The total audience for red notice is significantly lower than the number one movie on the list, but it’s been around for a lot longer. The royal treatment topped the list with 26.5 million hours in its second week on the service.
It should come as no surprise that, given the streaming prowess red notice posted over the past three months, Netflix is already working to turn the film into a franchise. The streaming service ordered not one, but two red notice sequels to go into production in the future. The films will be shot one after the other, so the wait between them will hopefully not be too long. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber is set to return for the two sequels starring Johnson, Reynolds and Gadot.
In red notice, Johnson plays a government agent looking to track down the world’s best art thief (Gadot). In order to stop his plans and clear his name, Johnson’s character teams up with the second best art thief in the world, played by Reynolds. It’s unclear at this time what story will be told in the upcoming sequels.
