Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is one of the most important players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Phase 4 stretches to 2022. After first playing the master magician in the 2016 solo film strange doctorthe hero had supporting roles in four other live-action films before this year’s solo sequel – Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
After Strange was included in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgameand Spider-Man: No Coming Home, there are countless current multiversal plot threads worthy of his attention. Even with Wanda Maximoff, America Chavez, and a variety of variants entering the fold, there are still significant actors in the film who first introduced Strange to MCU fans.
Alongside Cumberbatch’s hero in the original solo film were Rachel McAdams’ Christine Palmer and Benedict Wong’s Wong, both of whom will be back this time around. Wong was even promoted to Sorcerer Supreme. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo also features, though that film only showed the Master Mordo variant that Strange will fight.
While Doctor Strange 2 will feature at least one variant of Mordo, there’s still the MCU’s Mordo after the first one ends strange doctor film. On top of that, there’s a major unresolved thread from the second post-credits scene of this film that could have major ramifications if revisited.
The Purge of Wizards by Karl Mordo
In 2016’s second post-credits scene strange doctor, Karl Mordo of Chiwetel Ejiofor found Jonathan Pangborn of Benjamin Bratt and took Pangborn’s power from his body. Mordo concluded the scene by telling Pangborn that he had been doing this since the world had “too many wizards.”
Fans have yet to see the original version of Mordo in promotional material from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Even Ejiofor’s Master Mordo only saw a few seconds of screen time, leaving the original Mordo’s location and intentions still unclear.
Where does the Mordo thread go?
After leaving Doctor Strange and Wong on the streets of Hong Kong, Mordo made it clear that he was leaving the wizards of Kamar-Taj in favor of his own morally suspect mission to wipe out magicians across the world. However, since that post-credits scene at the end of 2016, there’s been no sign of where this cliffhanger moment will lead in the future.
With multiple variations of Doctor Strange, Wong, Wanda Maximoff and potentially others confirmed for Doctor Strange 2, chances are more than one Mordo will impact the plot. Should the original version of Mordo return alongside his variant at some point in the plot, Strange and his sidekicks will have to stay on their toes with the villain on a dangerous mission for the wizards of the MCU.
Returning to the mystery of Mordo is another major question – who will be the main villain in Doctor Strange 2?
Looking at this mystery, there’s a real chance that Ejiofor’s Mordo will end up in this main antagonist role, especially with fans who have already seen Strange fight his villainous variant at Illuminati headquarters. And with the multiverse on the brink of collapse, leaving the MCU to need its masters of magic to keep the world from falling into chaos, Mordo eliminating those magic users could be exactly what forces Strange to find the root of the problem.
While fans know to expect Mordo to return in at least one form, Marvel will be keeping the ultimate reveals about the original Mordo under wraps until the movie debuts in a few weeks. Knowing that this powerful adversary is somewhere in the world to take down wizards should be a major concern for everyone involved in this new story.
