Joey King has an exciting update on the Uglies adaptation of the YA bestseller for Netflix

With Netflix packaging The kissing booth trilogy last year alongside All the boys movies, there aren’t many high-profile YA movies on the streaming site at the moment. However, that will change once Joey King’s latest project ugly finally comes out after news of its development at the end of 2020. Scott Westerfield’s science fiction series has long been a huge bestseller for young adult audiences, and it turns out it’s coming sooner than expected.

CinemaBlend had the chance to speak with Joey King for his emotional Paramount+ romance, The in-between. During the chat, the actress and producer told us where she’s at with ugly‘ production, and she gave us an amazing update. In the words of King:

I just finished filming The Uglies. I just got back from Atlanta, where we shot just before Christmas. I can tell you that I’m personally also a huge fan of the Uglies book series and this movie so far, from what I’ve seen, done on set, and been able to be a part of, it’s so good. I’m so excited.

The 22-year-old actress is a big fan of the YA book which first came out in 2005 and spawned an eight-book series. the ugly the film is directed by McG, who previously directed the early 2000s charlie’s angels movies and Netflix Baby sitter movies. King stars in the film alongside Laverne Cox and a host of other young talent.

Hear that ugly has already been filmed and is currently in post-production is super exciting. What’s even better is how thrilled Joey King was at the mention of ugly during our interview. She seems super pumped to share the movie with her fellow ugly fans once the movie is over.

The sci-fi story follows a teenager named Tally Youngblood who lives in a dystopian world 3,000 years in the future where people undergo plastic surgery at the age of 16 to become “pretty” and then cross into another part of town to start their lives.

the ugly The storyline is definitely more relevant than ever given that face filters on social media like Instagram have become more prevalent in society, especially for the younger generation. After a few simpler romance adaptations for YA, we’ll be glad to see Netflix dive into the sci-fi genre with this one.
