Midnight Mass director Mike Flanagan reveals to fans that he would like to one day direct a Star Wars movie that focuses on the Sith.
Midnight Mass creator/director Mike Flanagan took to social media to express his interest in directing a star wars film centered on the Sith. The influential filmmaker has become one of the biggest names in horror over the past few years with his work on projects such as The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep. His latest Netflix project, The Fall of House Usherrecently started production.
Flanagan has become a defining voice in horror over the past decade. He broke out with films such as Oculus and silenceas well as the horror sequel Ouija board: the origin of evil – which was widely considered superior to its predecessor. From there, Flanagan became one of the Guardians of the Stephen King Universe, directing King adaptations such as Gerald’s game and Doctor Sleep. He recently found a home at Netflix, realizing The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Massand the next The Fall of House Usher for the streamer. Despite being a major fixture in horror right now, Flanagan clearly has aspirations for bigger franchise cinema, admitting last year that he wanted to do a horror story in the star wars universe.
He hasn’t slowed his vocal interest in joining a major franchise in recent days. In reality, Flanagan has recently been launched the idea of supporting a star wars story focusing on the Sith while responding to online memes about the next Obi Wan Kenobi series – titled by sound Doctor Sleep star, Ewan McGregor. In his response to the fan question on Twitter, he admitted that he “loveto do so. Check out Flanagan’s response below:
The idea of Flanagan getting into a Sith story hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans. In fact, following his post, fans started responding and expressing their support for the possibility of him embarking on such a project. Others have raised the possibility of him bringing actor and frequent Flanagan collaborator Rahul Kohli with him for the ride, an idea the director has also backed. Flanagan hasn’t been announced for this type of project, but it’s clear there’s a lot of fan enthusiasm for the concept.
There’s a solid argument to be made that Flanagan and the Sith are a perfect match from a storytelling standpoint. In the star wars universe, the Sith are an order of Force users who dedicate their lives to the dark side. Despite their status as villains, many stories about the Sith are characterized by horror and tragedy – two concepts that Flanagan excels at portraying as a director. Also, since the Sith have never made the front page of a star wars film as the central characters, Flanagan could probably reframe their perspective on the audience and add a bit of humanity to their actions, in addition to some serious dread.
