‘Petrov’s Flu’, ‘Medusa’ on the program of the Geneva Film Festival | New


The Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF, November 5-14) has unveiled its first selection under the direction of new director Anais Emery, including its competition lineup and an honorary award for Italian director Luca Guadagnino.

The international feature film competition of the Swiss festival will see 10 titles compete for the Reflet d’Or for best film. Among them, the Russian drama by Kirill Serebrennikov Petrov’s flu, who starred in competition at Cannes, and the Brazilian fantasy-horror of Anita Rocha da Silveira Astonished, which was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes and won the award for best Latin American film in San Sebastián.

Also competing for the Best Picture award, endowed with $ 10,800 (CHF 10,000), is Mounia Akl Costa Brava, Lebanon, which screened in Venice and won the Netpac Prize in Toronto, alongside Damien Odoul Theo and the metamorphosis, who played the Berlinale and won the grand prize at the New Horizons film festival in Poland.

It is one of three international competitions that will take place at the festival, which also includes prizes for the best series and the best immersive work. The latter considers XR installations and projects. Both prizes are also accompanied by a prize of CHF 10,000.

GIFF is also hosting the European Script Award for the second year, which offers a prize of € 10,000 to a new original series by a rising European screenwriter. The three suitors are Niklas Rockstrom for the drama of a Swedish policewoman Before dying, Henriette Steenstrup for the Norwegian drama Porn and Patrik Gyllstrom for the Swedish detective story series Hjerson by Agatha Christie.

Two honorary awards at this year’s GIFF will be presented to Call me by your name director Guadagnino, who will receive the Geneva Award during the festival; and graphic novelist, screenwriter and director Riad Sattouf, who will receive the Film and Beyond Award.

The 27th GIFF will open with the world premiere of Stephan Eicher It’s Alive: a journey into the invisible cinema and close with Eric Gravel’s Full time, following a ceremony to announce the winners.

This is the first edition under the direction of the new general and artistic director of GIFF Emery, co-founder of the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival, who replaced Emmanuel Cuénod when he resigned last year.

Digital market

The 9th Geneva Digital Market, which serves as both a forum and a pitch event, will run as a hybrid event from November 8 to 12.

Industry discussions include a glimpse into the future of Netflix in Switzerland and the potential for co-productions and collaborations with the streaming giant, with Netflix’s director of public policy Wolf Osthaus scheduled to speak.

The lectures will also include a discussion on the use of AI in the production and writing process of series, and the impact of hybrid events on the environment.

A selection of 25 digital projects will also be presented at the market.
