Ryan Gosling hilariously responds to criticism of his casting Ken in Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie.
Ryan Gosling fires back at fans who criticize his version of Ken in the upcoming Barbie film. Based on the eponymous Mattel toy line, Barbie is directed by Greta Gerwig, with a screenplay written by her and Noah Baumbach. The film features Margot Robbie in the lead role with Gosling opposite her as Ken, Barbie’s toy counterpart. Support actors to Barbie include Emma Mackey, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Ritu Arya, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon and America Ferrera.
Despite the general enthusiasm surrounding the project, when promotional images for Barbie began posting online, some fans took issue with Gosling’s Ken. The image in question shows Gosling sporting a very different look from his other films, with bleached blonde hair and a denim jacket with cropped sleeves, standing in front of a bright pink house. Some have criticized Gosling’s casting due to his age, with the Blade Runner 2049 actor now 41 years old. Robbie, on the other hand, is 32, putting the age difference between the two Barbie stars at almost 10 years.
In an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gosling fires back at those who criticized his version of Ken, jokingly suggesting that they probably never played with the Ken toy. The actor says Ken is “an accessoryto Barbie and that, until the movie was announced, fans who are critical of its casting probably never even thought of it. Check out Gosling’s amusing comment below:
I was surprised how, you know, some people kind of clutched their pearls about my Ken, like they’d already thought about Ken a second before that. They never played with Ken. Nobody plays with Ken, man. It’s an accessory and not even one of the coolest.
Although it remains to be seen how Gosling’s depiction of the iconic Barbie The character comes to life on the big screen, videos and images from the set have already announced some of what is to come. One memorable moment involves Gosling letting out a high-pitched scream when Robbie’s Barbie hits a fumbler, a situation that many fans seemed to find quite amusing. Gosling’s comment is unlikely to change the minds of anyone who thinks he’s too old, but it’s clear that at least one vocal group of fans really like what has been shown of his portrayal so far.
Plot details remain mostly unknown Barbie, and it’s still unclear how well Ken and Barbie will stick to the Mattel toy backstory. For the most part, however, Gosling’s comment rings true, with Barbie usually being the primary focus when it comes to the toy line, especially since the toys were primarily marketed to young girls. Of course, it is also quite possible that the Barbie The film will address and explain some of the fan complaints that have surfaced about Gosling’s Ken, but fans, it’s likely fans won’t find out until the movie is released next summer.
