Genres are falling in popularity in Hollywood. Westerns, gangster images, historical epics in sword and sandal – everyone spent their day in the sun before slipping into the niche. In the 21st century, it is the superhero film that dominates the multiplexes. Superheroes have had a bigger cultural impact on filmmaking than they ever did in their native comics.
The superhero train shows few signs of slowing down, although its importance has grown from abundance to glut. Some years have seen a lot more superhero movie releases than others.
ten In 2004, five superhero films were released
The early 2000s started the superhero boom, but was just a taste of what was to come. Three adaptations of Marvel, all produced by different studios, have been released. that of Sam Raimi Spider-man 2 (Sony), by David Goyer Blade trinity (New Line Cinema) and Jonathan Hensleigh The punisher (Lion’s Gate). WB also delivered a loose DC adaptation with cat woman.
Among these, Spider-man 2 was the clear winner – critically and commercially. However, 2004 was also the year that Brad Bird’s film was released. The Incredibles, which has proven that you don’t need comic book source material for excellence.
9 2005 escalated from 2004, with six superhero films
The following year, things did not slow down. DC side, Batman begins was the best out. Constantine (a coward Hellblazer adaptation with Keanu Reeves) has now become a cult classic.
Marvel adaptations have had much less success. From mediocre to best of Tim Story The Fantastic Four to the lamentable Elektra. Original movie Sky high was moderately successful, but The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl was not particularly successful.
8 2011 saw the release of six superhero movies and the start of the MCU
While the 2000s were teeming with superhero movies, the genre only began to dominate Hollywood in the 2010s with the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2011 paved the way for The Avengers with Thor and Captain America: The First Avengers, two moderate successes. X-Men: First Class gave new life to his series.
Less successful have been Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (wild like its predecessor). The Green Lantern (which anticipated DC’s plans for a clean cinematic universe). And finally, the forgotten parody / vehicle of Seth Rogen, The green hornet.
seven 2014 saw three successes, three disappointments
Marvel Studios released two of their best films in 2014 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. Captain America remains the best movie the Russo brothers have ever made. The latter, directed by James Gunn, is one of the few Marvel films bursting with personality. X Men: Days of the future past satisfactorily resolved the two franchise timelines.
On another side, Robocop and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were failures, and The Incredible Spider-Man 2 underperformed.
6 2018 went further with seven superhero movies
2018 would be the year of Marvel, every year thereafter fought for the title. Of the seven superhero films released that year, five were based on Marvel characters. 3 Marvel Studios movies – Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. A 20th Century Fox film – dead Pool 2 – and one by Sony – Venom. Warner Bros extended the DCEU with Aquaman, while The darkest spirits was a failed attempt at an original superhero story.
5 2021 had 8 superhero movies
2021 has seen a wave of eight superhero films. Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, and Venom: let there be carnage had been postponed from 2020 thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Marvel Studios also released Eternals and collaborated again with Sony with Spider-Man: No Path Home.
Warner Bros released The suicide squad and Zack Snyder Justice League, a montage so different from cinema that it can be considered as a film in its own right. Hasbro and Paramount sneaked in with their own attempt at a franchise builder, Snake-eyes, to a muted reception.
4 2008 saw an influx of 9 superhero movies
2008 was the year of the 2000s with the most superhero movies. Two of these films, The black Knight and Iron Man, changed the genre forever. The black Knight brought unseen prestige to superheroes. Iron Man gave credit to the industry and the public of Marvel Studios. Hellboy II: The Golden Army has not been as successful, but it is of high quality.
The Incredible Hulk, Jumper, Hancock, Superhero Movie, and The mind did not work so well. The mind, directed by Frank Miller, proven talent in comics does not translate into talent in movies.
3 2016 saw Marvel and DC compete most directly
By 2016, the MCU was well established – Captain America: Civil War and Doctor strange were both general successes. Warner Bros. had a much tougher year – Batman v superman and Suicide Squad were disappointments. 20th Century Fox has had a mixed year; dead Pool was a success, but X Men: apocalypse disappointed.
Unlike most DC animated films, Batman: the murderous joke got a brief theatrical release, which he certainly didn’t deserve. TMNT 2 and Steel max. also reached theaters, but was not seen by many. With nine superhero movies, 2016 was definitely a year for quantity rather than quality.
2 2017 was one of the best years for the genre
2017 had as many superhero movies as the year before, but that was an improvement in quality. Logan got the highest praise a superhero movie has had since The black Knight. Logan has real emotional weight and conclusive quality. Marvel Studios is out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok, two of their most important efforts.
Marvel and Sony produced the entertaining service Spider-Man: Homecoming. The DCEU ultimately had success with Wonder Woman. M. Night Shyamalan pursued his redemption with To divide. Power rangers was better than expected but underperformed, while sleight of hand was a true independent superhero movie.
1 2019 saw the apex of ten superhero movies released
2019 was the height of the amount of superhero movie releases. Marvel Studios produces Captain marvel then Avengers: Infinity War, while Spider-Man: Far From Home was another Marvel / Sony collaboration.
20th century fox X Men the series came out on a moan with Dark phoenix. WB has had two different successes with Shazam and Joker. More interestingly, the movie industry has seen wide releases of four original superhero films – Glass, Quick color, El Chicano, and the horror parody of Superman Sharp burn.
