Cape Canaveral, Fla .– Captain Kirk will be diving into space next week – will boldly travel to places no other sci-fi actor has ever been.
Jeff Bezos’ space travel company Blue Origin announced Monday that “Star Trek” actor William Shatner will be blowing up from West Texas on October 12.
“Yes that’s right; I’ll be a rocketman!” The 90-year-old tweeted on Twitter.
“It’s never too late to experience something new,” he added.
Amazon founder Bezos is a huge fan of the sci-fi series and also made an appearance as a high-ranking alien in the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond. His rocket company invited Shatner to fly as a guest.
Shatner will be the oldest person to go to space. He rides a Blue Origin capsule and joins three other people, two of whom are paying customers.
He would have been the first actor in space if Russia had not launched an actress and director on the International Space Station today for nearly two weeks of filming.
In comparison, Shatner’s flight is only 10 minutes long, reaching less than about 66 miles. The capsule parachutes onto the desert floor not far from where it took off.
Whether the flight is short or long, space travel is rapidly gaining momentum.
Virgin Galactic brought founder Richard Branson to the edge of the universe with five others in July, followed by Bezos space jumps nine days later.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s SpaceX launched its first private crew last month. A Pennsylvania entrepreneur bought a three-day flight and took two contest winners and a cancer survivor.
Virgin Galactic ships depart from airplanes and require two pilots. The Blue Origin and SpaceX capsules are fully automated, but passengers must pass a medical check, in particular to quickly climb several steps from the launch tower to reach the capsule or in case of emergency. Must be able to.
This will be Blue Origin’s second crew launch.
Bezos made its first flight on July 20.
He took the brother of Wally Funk, an 18-year-old Dutch aviation pioneer, the youngest and oldest to fly in space. Shatner will exceed that limit in eight years.
“I’ve been hearing about the universe for a long time. I take this opportunity to see it myself. What a miracle, ”Shatner said in a statement.
Shatner was Commanding Officer of the USS Starship Enterprise for three seasons from 1966 to 1969.
He also played Captain Kirk in seven films, including one. He is currently the host and executive producer of the story channel show “The UnXplained”.
He also flies with Shatner. A former NASA engineer who founded the nanosatellite company, he is the co-founder of a software company specializing in clinical research.
The two participated in an auction of seats for their first flight. The cost of this seat was $ 28 million. Blue Origin does not disclose other ticket prices.
The fourth seat on the flight will be the Vice President of Mission and Flight Operations at Blue Origin.
More than 20 current and former Blue Origin employees last week accused a Kent, Wash., Based company with a toxic work environment and failure to follow proper safety protocols.
Blue Origin said it does not tolerate harassment or discrimination and supports safety records.
The Bezos company is also challenging NASA’s award of the contract to SpaceX to supply a lunar lander that will bring astronauts back to the moon within a few years. Blue Origin did not bid for the work.
